Union soldiers in Ft. Sumter were trapped by Confeds. They were running out of food. Lincoln tells the Confed that he is only sending food and water (no weapons) to the fort but Confed troops fired at the supply ships anyways. It's important that the Confeds fired first; it caused more regions to support Lincoln in the war.

The fort falls; short term loss, long term win.
