In 1996, my parents immigrated from Guanajuato, Mexico to the Salinas Valley as they heard about the economic opportunities in the agriculture industry. My parents started working as fieldworkers in broccoli and lettuce during the 1990s and the economic struggles they saw back in their hometown in Mexico pushed them to stay in the U.S. My parents have lived in the U.S. for more than half their life but still remember their roots back in Mexico. My parents have lived in the U.S. for more than half of their lives, and they stand out as the first in their family to stay in the U.S. due to the financial freedom it offers that was unavailable in Mexico.
