The US had already secretly bombed Cambodia and destroyed the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The US also wanted to cut supply lines. However, civilians were massacred in Cambodian bombings.
But instead of stopping the bombing.
Nixon decided to go one step further by ordering the invasion of Cambodia. This was to prevent supplies from being handed over to North Vietnam. So the US invaded Cambodia and killed thousands. This was important because it caused outrage among the American public. They were told over and over again that the war was almost over.
But the US contradicted itself by simply extending the war to Cambodia.
