Buy New Orleans from French initially, US bargain for entire territory. Napoleon agreed largely because it was fighting war, couldn't afford to fight US in NA as well. Jefferson faced a dilemma in the purchase because the Constitution didn't necessarily grant him the right to get new land. Eventually stilled accepted it, demonstrates loose intrepretation by Jefferson (even though he is a Democrat-Repub)
