The Black Berets for Justice was created to combat discrimination and police brutality towards Latino and Indigenous San Jose residents. Members aimed to teach youth about Chicano pride and their indigenous roots through workshops and community events. Founded by Alselmo “Chemo” Candelaria, the militant group took training in self defense to protect the city from police officers and gang members. Their efforts also aimed to empower Chicano identity and strengthen Latino involvement in politics and the educational system.
