Civil Rights Activist and Nobel Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr. had been shot and killed on the balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The death opened a huge rift between white and Black Americans: many Black people saw the killing as a rejection of their vigorous pursuit of equality through the nonviolent resistance he had championed.Several days of riots and looting followed his death.
