Bay of Pigs: A failed U.S.-sponsored invasion of Cuba in 1961 by anti-Castro forces who planned to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government.
In January 1961, the Soviet Union announced that it intended to support “wars of national liberation” wherever in the world they occurred. Kennedy took Soviet premier Khrushchev at his word, especially regarding Cuba, where in 1959 communist revolutionaries under Fidel Castro had overthrown the right-wing dictator Fulgencio Batista. Determined to keep Cuba out of the Soviet orbit, Kennedy followed through on Eisenhower administration plans to orchestrate a raid by Cuban exiles meant to launch an anti-Castro uprising. The invaders, trained by the CIA, proved ill-prepared for the task. Shortly after the force of 1,400 landed at Cuba’s Bay of Pigs on April 17, 1961, Castro’s troops crushed them. Kennedy prudently rejected CIA pleas for a U.S. air strike. Accepting the defeat, the new president went before the American people and took full responsibility for the fiasco


Fidel Castro’s 1959 Communist takeover of Cuba brought Cold War tensions to the Caribbean. In 1961, the United States tried unsuccessfully to overthrow Castro’s regime by sponsoring the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuban exiles launched from Nicaragua and other points in the Caribbean. In 1962, the United States confronted the Soviet Union over Soviet construction of nuclear missile sites in Cuba. After President Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of the island, the Soviets backed down from the tense standoff and removed the missiles. Despite the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union and the official end of the Cold War, the United States continued to view Cuba, governed by Raúl Castro, Fidel’s brother, since 2008, as an enemy nation until 2016, when President Barack Obama began the process of normalizing relations between the two countries.
