Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, there was a need for an open line of communication between the Soviet Union and the United States, so the two countries decided to open a hotline. The hotline connected directly from the Whitehouse to the Kremlin, and the system was encrypted and translated as messages were sent to each side. The hotline made communication between the countries a few minutes rather than a few hours, which was a massive success at the time.
The hotline aimed to avoid further nuclear conflict, especially after the Cuban Missile Crisis. With the ability to go around the typical diplomatic approaches, there was a much quicker way to avoid major conflicts.
The system was used successfully used many times to streamline communication between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and did avoid multiple military acts. The hotline is still in use to this day, with some significant upgrades to the system's technology; nonetheless, it is still vital for communication between the United States and modern-day Russia.
