The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was signed in 1987 between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. The treaty aimed to eliminate ground-launched missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers, including both nuclear and conventional missiles. The treaty reduced tensions and the risk of a nuclear war between the two superpowers. However, in 2018, the United States pulled from the treaty, due to Russian violations. Russia also withdrew from the treaty, leading to concerns about a new arms race. The INF Treaty remains a significant historical milestone in arms control efforts and highlights the need for ongoing cooperative efforts to prevent nuclear warfare and reduce the risk of conflict.
