1 gen 1934 anni - AMerican Liberty LEague founded

Descrizione:

American Liberty LEague: group of Republican business leaders and conservative Democrats who banded together to fight what they called the “reckless spending” and “socialist” reforms of the New Deal.

NAM: An association of industrialists and business leaders opposed to government regulation. In the era of the New Deal, the group produced radio programs, motion pictures, billboards, and direct mail campaigns to promote free enterprise and unfettered capitalism.

Financial reforms exposed the New Deal to attack from economic conservatives — who formed a key constituency of the political right. The wealthy Roosevelt saw himself as the savior of American capitalism, declaring that “to preserve we had to reform.” Many bankers and business executives felt his reforms went too far. To them, FDR became “That Man,” a traitor to his class. In 1934, Republican business leaders joined with conservative Democrats in the American Liberty League to fight what they called the “reckless spending” and “socialist” reforms of the New Deal. The Liberty League lasted only a few years, but the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) proved a durable opponent of the New Deal. In response to what many conservatives perceived as Roosevelt’s antibusiness policies, the NAM produced radio programs, motion pictures, billboards, and direct mail campaigns to promote free enterprise and unfettered capitalism. After World War II, the NAM survived as a staunch critic of liberalism and it forged alliances with influential conservative politicians such as Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan

The Supreme Court also repudiated several cornerstones of the early New Deal. In May 1935, in Schechter v. United States, the Court unanimously ruled the National Industrial Recovery Act unconstitutional on two fronts: it delegated Congress’s lawmaking power to the executive branch and extended federal authority to intrastate (in contrast to interstate) commerce. Roosevelt could only protest as the conservative-leaning high court struck down other New Deal legislation: the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the Railroad Retirement Act, and a debt-relief law known as the Frazier-Lemke Act.
