The Prime Minister after Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, called a meeting with the premiers on the Constitution at Meech Lake, which was in Quebec. He proposed that Quebec be recognized as a distinct society and that Quebec all and the other provinces given more power in the choices of the federal government. Pierre Trudeau, the opposition, criticized Mulroney who was "giving the country away to the provinces." This led to backlash from Canadians which eventually killed the Accord 20 days later.
