Who: Choe Cheu - founder of the religion. Failed the civil service exam multiple times. Claimed to have received a heavenly mandate.
What: A religion that claims God is in Man, serving God by being respectful to man. Took root among the minorities and marginalized because it links them to divinity/worth. Persecution of the believers led to a political and religious uprising that demanded (4 part manifesto):
New form of government
End of social discrimination
Expel foreigners
Redistribution of property/economic reforms
Return of Taewon’gun
Where: Korea
Context: Li-Ho Convention beforehand, Sino-Japanese war afterward
When: Began in 1892, ended in 1894
Significance: China called in by Kojong (?) to suppress the uprising, Japan also helped, led to Sino-Japanese war as Japan seized Kyongbok palace. Also displays unhappiness with Korea’s leadership and current modernization.
