What messages did you hear/learn about being religious?
In middle school, I was much less in tune with my religious side. My family had stopped going to church, my siblings and grandmother included, and I rarely had any affiliation with any type of religion. That was until 8th grade, when I did not want to take a gym class, and instead opted for the new bible class that took us students off of campus to be preached to in a small building. This is where I almost lost all of my hope in religion and the ideologies that came with Christianity. We were taught simple Greek words, which was pretty cool, listened to Christian music occasionally, were told to act, as well as read bible verses in front of the class - sort of like popcorn. Not only this, but we also learned about the first seven days on Earth and what god did. Though, the only thing that I really walked away from in this class was a memory of my teacher saying "I am going to hell" and pacing back and forth repeating that same phrase. It was almost like a scare tactic. But aside from this, he also told us that religion was a safe haven for himself and that it helped him get off of drugs - which was good for him, but my mind thought about it in a way that was like: "so people use it as something to believe in to make their lives better, almost like a distraction?" and from then on, I have not been an atheist, but I definitely have been skeptical of religion and the concepts that come with it.
Where did the messages come from? (i.e. Parents, other family members, religious organizations, schools, teachers, media, other institutions, peers, etc.)
These messages came from a religious organization that hired a teacher to preach at my middle school for a brief amount of time.
What behaviors were encouraged, rewarded, and supported? How?
Behaviors that felt like they were encouraged were definitely having faith in god, not doubting it, and almost being scared into believing, because if you did not, you are to go to hell, pretty much.
What behaviors were discouraged, unsupported, and punished? How?
This goes hand in hand with the last question, but behaviors that were discouraged included questioning your faith, as if you did, you really did not have it in the first place. But, are you really human if you do not have doubts about these sorts of things?
