Pirates abandon ships as Johnny Depp and crew prepare to set sail for final scenes in Whitsundays
Holiday crowds are making the most of their last chance to inspect movie magic on the Gold Coast.

ONE man’s abandoned ship is another family man’s holiday highlight.
A procession of parents and kids, day trippers and curious locals made their way to The Spit by land and sea yesterday to inspect some of the remains of one of Hollywood’s most anticipated big-screen blockbusters.

While it will be another two years before the Gold Coast-filmed romp Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens in cinemas, local crowds are making the most of their chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s backdrops.

As construction crews continued dismantling the $300 million-plus production’s set on the section of sand known as The Finger, excited onlookers took shore leave at Bum’s Bay to inspect what’s left of the castaway beach set.

“Look it’s The Black Pearl,” Hamish Thatcher, 8, said, pointing at the remains of a 1750s replica single-masted sloop.

“No, I told you, it’s not The Black Pearl — it’s The Dying Gull,” dad Peter replied, pointing at writing on the ship’s stern to prove his point.

The Dying Gull is one of at least eight pirate ships featured in the latest instalment of the multi-billion dollar Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer film franchise which follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his motley pirate crew.

Johnny Depp leads the returning cast as Captain Jack, with Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa, Martin Klebba as pirate Marty, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner.

The film also introduces Pirates newcomers Kaya Scodelario as Carina, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner, Javier Bardem as Captain Salazar, Adam Brown as Jib, Stephen Graham as Scrum, David Wenham as Scarfield and Golshifteh Farahani as an as-yet unnamed character.

The Silent Mary, one of two pirate ghost ships at the film’s giant outdoor set at Helensvale, has been scuttled but sightseers will be pleased to hear The Black Pearl is still reasonably shipshape.

“There was work in Helensvale, but no shooting,” a Pirates 5 spokesman said yesterday.

While work to dismantle parts of the elaborate medieval village set at Maudsland has begun, more filming is expected to take place before the production leaves the Gold Coast in the middle of next week.

Cast and crew will then head north to the Whitsundays to roll their cameras on the final scenes of the massive project, which began filming in late February.

“After wrap, all sets will be struck as soon as possible, but (there is) no estimate on how long it will take,” the spokesman said.

The studio is expected to retain some items from the Pirates sets, built by locals and roundly praised by co-directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning for their masterful craftsmanship.

While it’s a shame to see so much hard work turned to scrap, it’s standard practice to pulp the tricks of the trade used to transport cinema audiences to another world.

Aussie director George Miller destroyed most of the sets and vehicles from Mad Max and George Lucas did the same with everything used for the two Star Wars movies filmed in Australia.

That’s showbiz!
