The Ottoman Turks captured and besieged the Byzantine city of Constantinople in this year. It marked the end of the Byzantine empire and allowed the Ottomans easier access to the rest of Europe. Europe was henceforth more succeptable to Muslim invasion, as a powerful defense was gone.
