Description: In 1910 the Sister's of Mercy opened the first Hospital based nursing school in Arizona (Shields, 1969). The first years were rough for the school because the requirements for admission were very loose. The applicants were very young and had minimal schooling prior to this. Over the years the admission requirements became more strict. Applicants were required to be at least 18 years old and have had 4 years of high school (Shields, 1969). The school was in operation for 60 years before closing its doors to the final graduating class in 1970.

Reflection: The requirements for nursing school have since changed to require preliminary education on the college level to prepare students for the biological/physiological sciences. This is in addition to entry level mathematics, psychology, and English/language arts.
