Slavery started in 1619 when 20 African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia. Slavery is the only reason Amari is being stolen from her home and almost starved to death. Mr. Derby forced Amari to come work for him for no pay and little food. Also Clay forced Amari to watch as he did many nasty things. Amari wasn't free and treated worse than dirt was. Although some people showed her kindness, she was forced to work nearly to her death.
