now: dead-end job
-women became stenographers, typists, secretaries, and most low-level office jobs
white, working class women: office work.clerking=new opportunities b/c there was no day care so they could do work at home with children/chores. Unmarried women could do domestic service/factory work, but they preferred clerking/secretarial work because it was cleaner, safer, and better paying
-phones started getting adopted by families (intended for businesses), so many women were expected to be telephone operators
-"By 1900 more than 4 million women worked for wages. About a third worked in domestic service; another third in industry; the rest in office work, teaching, nursing, or sales. As new occupations arose, the percentage of wage-earning women in domestic service dropped dramatically, a trend that continued in the twentieth century."
