Descrizione:
Rebecca Fitzgerald worked with a range of scientists to conduct this feasibility study to investigate whether Cytosponge can collect abnormal cells. They looked at materials used, the process of swallowing the device and whether the abnormal cells could be identified in laboratory or not.
The device consists of a sponge encapsulated within a gelatine coat. It dissolves in stomach within 5 minutes. Fitzgerald et al., used liquid based cytology to create cell monolayer on the slide. The slide was stained for MCM2, a biomarker abnormally expressed at luminal surface of Barrett's oesophagus. Its expression correlates with dysplasia.
