1 gen 1895 anni - Saint Joseph's Hospital opens.

Descrizione:

Description: The first medical facility in Phoenix, Saint Joseph's hospital was founded by the Sisters of Mercy. Originally a small cottage able to accommodate 12 patients on the corner of 4th Street and Polk, the Sisters very quickly realized they would need to expand (Shields, 1969).
Reflection: St. Joe's, as it is known here in Phoenix was one of the first of 3 hospitals in Arizona to offer a school of nursing that was accredited by the AzBN. The other two being Saint Mary's Hospital in Tucson and Arizona Deaconess Hospital (now Banner Good Samaritan) in Phoenix. It was the determination of the citizens of Phoenix and the Sisters of Mercy who allowed the hospital to survive though the 120+ years it has been in operation.
