Description: Saint Mary's was one of the first hospital based schools of nursing to be accredited by the (soon to be) AZ Board of Nursing; established in 1921. The school holds the honor of having the first licensed nurse in Arizona, Sister Evangelista Wey, as the director of their program at the time. Sister Wey was one of the premier members of the AzBN when it was established and holds Arizona nursing license number 1 (Randolph 2001). The school was closed in 1966.
Reflection: Similar to St. Joseph's Hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy in Phoenix, St. Mary's was founded by a group of 7 nuns from St. Joseph of Carondolet back in 1870 (Shields, 1969).
