Robert Hooke created a compound microscope that had two lenses, known as the objective and ocular lenses. They had a maximum magnification of about x1,500, Hooke looked at a cork tissue (tree bark) through the lenses, and called the 'bits' he could see cells because they looked like the small cells of honeycomb, therefore, the word cell was coined.
