within the mid-1670 time, there was almost a secret alignment between England and France as Charles was very lenient towards France as that was his welcome home when he was excited from England by the risk to his life

so when he went t France to pay them a visit Charles II and Louis XIV secretly signed a treaty together agreeing that
1. Charles try to get as much help from France to push England to share the beliefs of the roman catholic religion Louis XIV
2. to bond an anglo-France military alliance with one another by supporting each other with greater naval control within sharing resources to help France take and break down the United Provinces of the Netherlands, which was much into Louis XIV's desire

this had to be kept secret as France was an enemy towards England because of their catholic religion and it would not look good at all if people knew especially if parliament knew that Charles was getting help from a catholic nation to force Catholicism upon England a puritan nation and also sharing military powers with a catholic national was seen to be the worst idea to do with a so call enemy
