The Stamp Act taxed all papers in the colonies. In order to show you had paid the tax, the paper was stamped, hence the name "Stamp Act". This was the first direct tax on the colonists, and it was responded with backlash. Businesses openly disregarded the tax, colonial courts had to shut down, because no one was paying the tax needed for legal documents, and Patrick Henry made a list of resolutions, explaining how the Stamp Act is unjust as he claimed it violated their rights. He submitted these resolutions to the Virginia House of Burgesses. These acts of protests led to the eventual repeal of the Stamp Act by Parliament.
