The Confederate States of America is formed. A total of 11 states joined the Confederacy, this was so that they could protect the political balance that the South held from slavery. If all the slaves were free, a gradual decline in Southern Political Power would happen, and they wouldn't let that happen. This is something that the South collectively agreed on, some slave states were still loyal to the Union however, most Deep South states did join the Confederacy. This is seen as a failure of the Reconstruction, because a big piece of the Union has seceeded.
