The hearings were televised. Thousands of Americans would tune in. Over time, it was discovered the McCarthy had asked for special favors for his aide, doctored photographs, and used bullying tactics on a regular basis. Joseph Welch, attorney for the army, would receive a loud applause after he asked McCarthy if he had any sense of decency. The end was near for McCarthy, and in in late 1954, the senate censured him.
