Minnesota-statehood four years earlier, gave strip of land to Sakota Sioux for regular payments/supplies. The government leaders pocketed those funds. The Daota's children were starving, teh state gov ignored them.

summer of 1862: Dakota fighters attacked Minnesota coutnryside in surprise, THey were stopped at Fort Ridgely. Ultimately, they killed 400 white ppl (women+chidlren included). There was hysteria and ppl fled. There was a military court that sentenced 307 dakotans to death (showing they would be treated as criminals rather than military combatants). Lincoln stopped all but 38 of the deaths (they were hung in December of 1862 int eh largest mass executioninU.S. history).

result: two months later, congress cancels dakota treaties, revoked their annuities, and expelled them from Minnesota. They feld west to join nonreservation allies
