The U.S. was a major financial backer of Nationalist China led by Chiang Kai-shek. In 1945, communist guerilla forces led by Mao Zedong would capture much of China's countryside. Four years later, 1949, Mao's forced captured the capital city of China, Peking. Nationalists were forced to flee in Formosa where they claimed to be the true government of China in order to receive very sizeable aids from the U.S. The question of who lost China would be asked over the next 10 years in order to attack the Democratic party, and Truman.
