1 gen 1877 anni - Rutherford B. Hayes becomes president; federal Recosntruction ends
Descrizione:
Election of 1876:
after election of 1874: Republicans abandoned Grant to nominate Rutherford B. Hayes (former union general, not corrupt, from Ohio, secretly preferred teh south)
Democrats: Samuel J. Tilden (new york governor, wall street lawyer, reform reputation, repfered the south) (reconstruction wasn't a big part of his capmpaign since the enforcement was don't he wane (only 3 states) and there was a severe economic depression) (he ignored Florida, SC< and Louisiana since they were under reconstruction govs, but those states won republicans the electoral vote [evidence of democratic corruption in those votes too])
1877-Congress meets to discuss two sets of electoral votes from SC, Florida, and Lousiana where they thought democrats had swayed the electoral votes. The constitution doesn't say what to do in that case. PPl didn;t know if there would be inside deals, a new election, or a violent coup. Congress appointed an electoral commission (half dem, half republican, and a supreme court member with no fixed loyalties [however that man disqualified himself by accepting an Illinois senate seat]) to settle things. The unbiased justice was replaced with a republican one. PPl voted on party lines, and hayes won.
REsult: Dems wanted to stop the final electoral votes counting. They went along though because Tilden wanted them to. (Hayes had publicly said he was willing to give substantial patronage to the SOuth, including federal funds for education and internal improvements)(Hayes thought he could count on support from old-line southern whigs and protect black voting rights)
Hayes- inaugurated on March 4 (on time) and said he hopes gov could carefully and equally represent both white and black citizens. But, few union soldiers remained in the south and the president called them back. REpublican admins in the south collapsed. Reconstruction ended.
