There were four prominent parties in this election. They were Republican, Southern Democratic, Northern Democratic, and Constitutional Union. The Southern Democratic representative supported slavery, while the Republicans did not. The Northern Democrats thought the people should vote on it, and the Constitutional Unionists remained indeceisive.
