Before: Sherman has a bold strategy after Atlanta. He didn't want to chase the Confederate army northward into Tennessee. He wanted to move South, live off the land, and cut a swath through to the sea. He said it would show the world that they are powerful and will make Davis and the South feel the war. They left Atlanta in flames and started their March to teh Sea

during the march to the sea: they demolished everything in their path (property), and Confederate soldiers were so demoralized that many deserted and went home. When they reached Savannah mid Decemner, the defenders left without a fight. African Americans in Georgia treated Sherman as a savior. He issued Special Field Order No. 15 (revoked later) after noticing the many freed families following his army.
