17 sett 1862 anni - Union halts Confederates at ANtietam
Descrizione:
before: Second Battle of Bull Run, confederacy through western Maryland
Lee divided his forces (Jackson to Harpers Ferry in West Virginia). McClellan got a hold of his orders but delayed an attack against Lee, letting him get a strong defensive position west of Antietam Creek (near Sharpsburg Maryland). The armies clashed. Lee was outnumbered until Jackson came. There was savage fighting (Bloody lane) and it was the bloodiest single day in U.S. Military History.McClellan was appalled by casualties, let Lee retreat to Virginia.
after: publicly, Lincoln was happy, but he really was upset with McClellan for not pursuing Lee for a full Confederate surrender (who didn't want to risk troops and undermine support for war). Lincoln was worried about a lengthy war and dismissed McClellan to find an aggressive general. Then, he worked on emancipation.
