14 magg 1509 anni - War of the League of Cambrai
Descrizione:
Eager to take Venetian lands, all neighboring powers joined in the League of Cambria under the leadership of Pope Julius II. The pope wanted Romagna, Maximilian I Friuli and Veneto, Spain the Apulia ports, France Cremona, Hungary Dalmatia, etc. An offensive against the huge Venetian army was launched from France. At the Battle of Agnello, in the Ghiara d'Adda, Venice was crushingly defeated in one of the low point of Venetian history. French and Imperial troops occupied Venice, though the city extricated itself through diplomacy. The Apulian ports were ceded to Spain but Pope Julius II realized the danger of the destruction of Vencie, the only Italian power able to face larger states. Padua was recaptured by Venice, and Spain and the Pope broke off their alliance with France. Venice also regained Brescia and Verona from France, and after seven years of difficult war regained mainland territory up to the Adda. Defeat had turned to victory, but this marked the end of Venetian expansion.
