Edward I of England imposed a great amount of authority over the King he had chosen for Scotland, John of Balliol. When John of Balliol refused to ally with England in a war against France, fighting broke out between the two nations. Edward I then imprisoned John of Balliol and took over control of Scotland.

John Barbour's epic poem The Brus (c.1370s) contains the following extract:
When mighty Edward with high hand
Had thus deported from the land
Sir John the Baliol, whom his frown
From throne to prison had cast down,
To Scotland he went speedily

The kingless realm to occupy,
And all the land fell in his power
With castle, city, town, and tower,
From where Wick, facing Orkney, lay
South to the Mull of Galloway.
Sheriffs and bailiffs made he then

And stuffed the land with Englishmen,
And officers of every kind,
To whom the rule of land's assigned,
From his own countrymen he drew."

What does this say on peace?
Barbour describes the corrupt power of Edward I who used his control over Scotland to implement English officers. While these officers served in purpose to quash any uprising conflict from the Scots, Barbour's depiction makes it clear that they ended up aggravating the Scots more. Peace was impossible to mantain through this method.
