He raided Harpers Ferry w/ eighteen other heavily armed men and hoped to arm slaves with the weapons there so they could have a rebellion to end slavery (the raid failed, brown was captured, was tried to be executed, he came to the courthouse on a stretcher martyr).

Funded by "Secret Six" (abolitionist group). Northern church bells tolled the day Brown was hung.

effects: Abolitionists said it was a model for insurrection. Southerners said it proved why disunion was vital. Republicans denounced Brown's plot. Democrats said it was a result of the Republican party's ideas and said the republicans were planning violence.
