In radio astronomy, which studies the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by astronomical objects, radio telescopes are the main observing instruments, just as optical telescopes are the main observing instruments in traditional optical astronomy, which studies the light wave portion of the spectrum, to detect radio waves from astronomical radio sources in the sky. Radio telescopes, in contrast to optical telescopes, may be utilised both during the day and at night.

Radio telescopes need very big antennas to collect enough radio energy to investigate astronomical radio sources like planets, stars, nebulas, and galaxies as well as incredibly sensitive reception apparatus since they are so far away and their radio waves are so feeble. Large parabolic ("dish") antennas, like those used to track and communicate with satellites and spacecraft, are frequently used in radio telescopes. They can be used individually or electrically connected in an array. To minimise electromagnetic interference (EMI) from radio, television, radar, cars, and other man-made electronic equipment, radio observatories are often situated distant from large population areas.
