Anna Arnold Hedgeman was a writer, educator, and civil rights advocate. In 1922, she became the first African American graduate of Hamline University. Later, she worked on Harry Truman's presidential reelection campaign and would go on to serve as executive director of the National Council for a Permanent Fair Employment Practices Commission— she was also the first African-American woman to hold a cabinet post in New York. In 1963, she was the only woman on the planning committee for the March on Washington (Burnside).
