In February, the British Parliament declared that the colony of Massachusetts to be in open rebellion and authorized British troops to kill the rebels. They were also ordered to destroy all stores that had ammunition and fire arms because they were afraid of them storing enough fire arms to start a rebellion. Lt Gen Thomas Gage, the commander-in-chief of the British Army in America, was given command to quell the rebellion. The American spies warned Paul Revere and William Dawes and they sent out warnnings. At 5:00 am An unknown soldier accidently fired a shot. This was the infamous "Shot heard 'round the World." It's not known if it was the British or the militia that fired the shot. 8 Massachusetts men died and ten were wounded while only one British soldier was injured.
