Salazar Slytherin held a natural disdain for students not Pure of Blood, and tried to convince the other Professors to allow entry to only those of the Pureblood lines of Britain and Ireland. The other Houses disagreed, and eventually Slytherin and Gryffindor had a huge argument over the subject. According to the Sorting Hat it is possible that they dueled, or that a civil war of sorts broke out between the houses. Following this feud, Slytherin chose to leave the school, never to return.

Before his permanent departure from Hogwarts, he had left the Chamber of Secrets and his Basilisk behind. It is unknown when he died.
