After his 1998 arrest in London, Pinochet’s immunity as a former head of state was debated back and forth between the House of Lords and the courts for months. He was released in March 2000 because of his ill health.

The same concerns over his immunity and his health delayed his being prosecuted at home.

He died in 2006, shortly after he was stripped of all immunity. He was 91 years old. He was never prosecuted for his crimes.
