The death was initially reported as “unexplained” — Berezovsky had survived two earlier assassination attempts — but police later said it was consistent with hanging and that no third party was involved.

Bell, who was informed of Berezovsky’s death by the oligarch’s lawyer, acted as spokesperson in the aftermath.

He told the Telegraph: "He was a very close friend and a very nice man, very kind to me and to the people around him."

To the Sunday Times, he said, “He had no money, he had lost it all. He was unbelievably depressed.”
In a later interview (see videos), he said, “I adored Berezovksy… Nobody thought he would kill himself. He didn't. He was clearly murdered by the Russians."
