- Five men were sacked unfairly at Putilov Steel Works in St Petersburg. This resulted in virtually the entire factory going on strike by the 3rd of January 1905.
- Massive strikes began throughout the city in support of Putilov
150,000 workers were striking in 382 factories by Friday January 7th
- By January 8th the city had no electricity, newspapers and all public areas declared closed
- Then Bloody Sunday occurred
- In July spontaneous peasant revolts occurred which attacked landowners and burnt and looted estates
- Union of Unions was established in May
- All-Russian Union of Peasants established in June
Peasant Union of demands released October 1905. This demanded a national parliament, secret/universal adult sufferage, equal rights for peasants, land to be given to landless peasants, free universal education, amnesty for political prisoners and freedom of movement around the countryside. The union was 90 million peasants strong and refused to pay taxes, provide army recruits or obey Tsarist officials if ignored.

- Over 50 Soviets formed throughout Russia
