26 dic 1991 anni - Dissolution of the Soviet Union
Descrizione:
The Soviet Union dissolved on the 26th of December 1991, marking the end to an empire that had lasted for almost 70 years, an empire which still remains the third largest in history. Although the actual collapse of the Soviet Union was quite quick, their were many long-term effects that also played a decisive role in this dissolution. During the Soviet Union, due to the climate and poor worker productivity, there was a very low output of crops and consumer goods, something which heavily affected the Soviet Union's centrally planned economy. As well as this, because of high spending on the military due to the Cold War, the Soviet Union's economy was affected even more, and with the denial of rights and freedoms as well as many ethnic and nationalist movements, many people did not want the Soviet Union anymore, and the Soviet Union's popularity plummeted.
There were also many immediate causes that resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with the war with Afghanistan. food and fuel shortages and demonstrations in the Baltic states all playing a pivotal role in the Soviet Union's dissolution.
As the Soviet Union was one of the most significant empires of all time, it's dissolution sent shockwaves across the world. The final straw for the collapse of the Soviet Union actually came from a large process of Democratization that Gorbachev (Last president of the Soviet Union) created, which allowed elections with a multi-party system and created a presidency, with Communist control being destabilized. This was the final straw for the Soviet Union, and it eventually collapsed. The Soviet Union was broken into 15 republics, with a Russian republic approving of a new constitution, and their was a changeover to Russia's market economy, making it a more capitalist system. The collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in a few wars, like the war in Chechnya, but one of the biggest outcomes of its dissolution was the end of the Cold War, with after almost 50 years of it going on, bringing the world so close to nuclear war and living in constant fear, it was finally over, and the Soviet Union was gone..
