British Capt. Murdock MacLaine with fifty (50) men of the 84th Regiment of Foot manned the post at Fair Lawn Plantation, a "strong brick house constructed for defense as well as for comfort," with by considerable abatis. This plantation protected a good landing on the Cooper River. Patriot Lt. Col. Hezekiah Maham with 180 of his men plus 200 men from Col. Isaac Shelby (NC) and Col. John Sevier (NC) was sent to take Fair Lawn. Maham considered the main house to strong so he attacked an outbuilding he learned was a British hospital. Col Shelby's rifleman covered the redoubt while Maham cavalry demanded the surrender which was granted. Maham captured 300 arms and other goods along with 150 prisoners. Of the 150 prisoner, 80 could walk and the others were paroled. The Patriots burned the hospital and rode away while the British garrison watched the entire event.
