The evening of Jul 11th Loyalist Capt. Christian Hucks with a force of 115 made up of Tarleton's Green Dragoons, New York Volunteers and Loyalist militia arrived at Williamson's Plantation in Brattonsville camping at the plantation house. Hucks was looking for Lt Col William Bratton along with other local Patriot leaders. Bratton's Plantation home was less that a mile from the Williamsons. Unknown to Hucks, a large force ot 250 Patriot militia rode through the night arriving at Williamson home before daylight on th e12th. The Patriots attacked at daylight from two directions surprising the Loyalist. As Capt. Hucks mounted his horse, Patriot Thomas Carroll shot Hucks in the head, killing him. The battle lasted little over an hour with the Loyalist losing 25 to 50 killed, more than that number wounded and 29 captured. When Lord Cornwallis reported to General Clinton, "the Captain is killed, and only 12 of the legion and as many melitia escaped. The victory rallied Patriot support and told the British South Carolina was not a "conquered province".
