Director Bruce Robinson arrived in Puerto Rico then put out a call for extras for the film with several casting calls to be held.

Local newspaper El Nuevo Dia: Johnny Depp is looking for a battalion of more than 800 local extras for the film The Rum Diary, which begins filming on the island on March 30.

The casting agency in charge of finding extras to appear in Bruce Robinson's upcoming film The Rum Diary was astonished at the response to their first casting calls. In Condado, Puerto Rico more than 800 people crowded into the Marriott Hotel for their chance to register and have a photo taken.
