Among many attempts to convert all Sunnis to Shiism, the Safavid Empire suffered a crushing defeat by the Ottomans in 1514 at the Battle of Chaldiran. No match for the Ottomans’ superior gunpowder weapons, the battle helped define Ottoman and Safavid borders.
