Native Hawaiians enthusiastically welcomed James Cook and his crew when they made landfall on the island of Kauai. The two communities exchanged goods and services before parting on very good terms as Cook left for North America.

The relationship soured when Cook returned about a year later. Violent conflict led to the deaths of both Hawaiian and British leaders (including Cook). Hawaii remained an independent kingdom for about 100 years, until it was officially annexed by the United States and later became its newest state in 1959.
