The Battle of Ankara was a battle fought in 1402, and was between the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I and the Emir of the Timurid Empire. The battle was catastrophic for the Ottoman state, fracturing what remained and bringing almost total collapse to the empire. 10's of thousands of people died, and the catastrophic caused an Ottoman civil war, which lasted for another 11 years.

This was significant because this catastrophic defeat was in their heartland, and Sultan Bayezid was captured. His empire was tossed into chaos, with division everywhere. This chaos and division was further continued by Bayezid's sons, who caused a civil war amongst themselves across the empire. It also resulted in an Interregnum, meaning government was suspended for years. It also had massive effects across the continent, and gave the Byzantine Empire another fifty years of life. This all shows how massive the affect was, taking decades for the Ottomans to regain their power.
