Long before Patrick's second son John became chief . John joined the Royal Navy when he was only thirteen. He went to sea as a midshipman where he fought in many engagements during the Napoleonic wars and afterwards.

Sir John rose from a midshipman to the rank of Vice Admiral, R.N., K.C.B. He was known for his courageous seamanship.
